So let’s get started
Determine your style
“Be faithful to your own taste, because nothing you really like is ever out of style”
– Billy Baldwin
A well-designed interior speaks volumes of the materials used that complements to its final finish and you should definitely put in a lot of consideration into the materials that are implemented into the design of your interiors. When designing interiors, a lot of brainstorming goes into its planning, like, colour, lighting, texture, scale, comfort, etc. Though there are so many factors to consider while choosing the materials, here we are going to explain a few important things to remember before you choose materials for interior design that will add life and personality to the final design. So let’s get started:
Make your budget
“A budget tells us what we can’t afford, but it doesn’t keep us from buying it.”
― William Feather
Now that you have completed the most important and tedious task; and narrowed down on your style, you need to know the budget that you can allocate on this project. The budget comes second in our list because, without a budget, an interior design project can easily spiral out of control. Setting up a fixed budget with which you are perfectly comfortable can help to differentiate between your needs vs wants. When it comes to choosing materials for your interiors, you will find a single material in multiple qualities and brands and the prices would vary accordingly. This way when you have a set budget it would be easier for you to decide on quality or brand of the material to choose from.
Select your texture
“The details are not the details. They make the design.”
– Charles Eames
The texture is one of the most essential aspects that often gets overlooked while choosing materials for interior design. Texture plays a huge role in making an interior space pop, impacting its visual as well as tactile appeal. Texture in interior design refers to the surface quality of material and it helps in understanding the look and feel of a space. So based on your design style you can select the texture that goes with the scheme. Choosing the right texture would help you in choosing the materials for interior design as it reflects off the materials in the room around them and often bring these materials we use in the interiors to life. Texture not only emphasizes personality in the space but is also a way to create uniqueness to your interiors
Study the layout of your space
“A great building must begin with the immeasurable, must go through measurable means when it is being designed, and in the end must be unmeasured.”
– Louis Kahn
Now that you have envisioned the style, budget and the look and feel of your interiors, which was more of a creative and financial part of designing. Now let’s get into the geometrical part of interior designing. This is another crucial aspect to consider before you choose the materials for your interior design because every space has its own unique dimensions and to work around them, you need to know the size and scale of the space that you are designing. This helps in contemplating on how you want your space to be organized before choosing the materials for your interiors, most importantly furniture, so that it fits into the layout. Be very sure about your measurement as you don’t want anything to feel squeezed, over-sized, or uncomfortably positioned.
Choose functionality first
“Form follows function – that has been misunderstood. Form and function should be one, joined in a spiritual union.”
– FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT
Functionality is one of the key aspects of interior design which should never be overlooked. It is the functionality of an interior that determines the comfort of your space. The comfort of moving around in your space freely or opening the door of your closet without crashing anything etc. This means the material you choose for your interiors should be functional and give you enough space to perform your daily actions. In the end, it’s not only the beauty of your space that matters but also the comfort of the space.
Choosing materials for your interior design may not be that difficult, considering that you are ready to put all your efforts and time into it. Always start with a style and references and proceed with the budget planning according to your style and finally choose the right furniture and other materials based on the texture of your choice and remember to study your layout thoroughly before you go out and start purchasing your materials. Balancing beauty and functionality in the use of materials will save you time and money in the long run.
